Atmosphere and composition

Atmosphere78% N₂, 21% O₂ and 1% argon at 1 bar - the only known atmosphere whose free oxygen is continuously made by life.
CompositionAn iron-nickel core (solid inner, molten outer), a silicate mantle, and a thin crust broken into drifting tectonic plates.

Interior structure

Inner core observed
Solid iron-nickel, about the size of Pluto, at ~5,400 °C.
Outer core observed
Flowing liquid metal - the dynamo that makes the magnetic field.
Mantle observed
Slowly convecting solid rock, driving plate tectonics above.

A skin 5-70 km thick - proportionally thinner than an apple’s peel.

How we know: Earthquake waves crossing the planet reveal each boundary directly - seismology gives Earth the best-known interior of any world.
