The comet nursery next door

When Neptune’s gravity nudges a Kuiper Belt object onto a plunging orbit, it can end up as a short-period comet like 67P - one that returns predictably every few years or decades. The belt is a deep-freeze archive: because it is so cold and collisions are rare, its ices preserve the original material of the solar nebula better than anywhere planets exist.

New Horizons gave humanity its first close look at Pluto in July 2015, revealing nitrogen-ice glaciers and towering water-ice mountains. It then flew past the Kuiper belt object Arrokoth in 2019 - the most distant world ever explored - and continues outward on an extended Kuiper belt mission.

What is still uncertain

Listed size is the belt’s radial extent from the Sun, not a body diameter. The particle swarm shown in-app is an illustrative population drawn from the belt’s real orbital structure (classicals, plutinos, scattered disc), not individual catalogued objects.
