Pluto is the best-known world of the Kuiper belt: a dwarf planet of nitrogen glaciers, water-ice mountains and blue haze. New Horizons’ 2015 flyby revealed Sputnik Planitia, the bright half of Pluto’s famous “heart” - a thousand-kilometre plain of frozen nitrogen that is still slowly churning today.
Open the 3D Solar SystemIn 2006 the IAU defined a planet as a body that orbits the Sun, is round, and has cleared its orbital neighbourhood. Pluto passes the first two tests but honestly fails the third - it shares its zone with thousands of Kuiper belt objects and even crosses Neptune’s orbit. The reclassification was less a demotion than a recognition that Pluto is the brightest member of a vast new family.
